Winter is the toughest season for UK lawns – especially in areas like Epsom, Ewell, Ashtead and Banstead, where clay soil and frosts make grass vulnerable.
If you want a healthy, green lawn in spring, you must protect it now. Winter lawn care isn’t about growth – it’s about survival and prevention.
Here’s how to keep your lawn in top shape through the cold, wet months.
1. Avoid Walking on Frosted Grass
This is rule number one. Frosted grass blades are brittle, and walking on them causes:
- cell damage
- brown footprints
- patchy dead areas that won’t recover until spring
If it looks crunchy, leave it alone.
2. Improve Lawn Drainage
Surrey’s clay soil means lawns easily become waterlogged. Standing water suffocates roots and creates moss.
Ways to improve drainage:
- aerate (fork holes or hollow-tine)
- top-dress with sand/compost mix
- level uneven dips
- keep gutters clear
Better drainage = stronger roots = less winter damage.
3. Keep Leaves Off the Grass
A blanket of leaves blocks:
- airflow
- sunlight
- moisture evaporation
This creates a breeding ground for disease and moss.
Clear leaves weekly – your lawn will thank you.
4. Raise Your Mower Height for the Final Cut
If you haven’t given your lawn its last tidy-up of the year, raise the cutting height.
Longer grass:
- tolerates frost better
- maintains stronger roots
- stays greener through winter
Just don’t cut when the ground is wet or frosty.
5. Feed with a Winter Lawn Treatment
Autumn/winter lawn feeds are high in potassium, which:
- strengthens roots
- improves cold resistance
- reduces disease risk
Avoid nitrogen-rich feeds – they force soft growth that winter will kill instantly.
6. Repair Bare Patches Before It Gets Too Cold
If you spot thin areas, get ahead of them.
Use:
- turf
- patch repair mix
- sturdy seed (early in December only)
Once the real cold hits, new seed won’t germinate – but turf will settle as long as the soil isn’t frozen.
7. Control Moss Early
Wet, shaded Surrey gardens are moss heaven.
If you don’t control it early, you’ll have a moss lawn by February.
Treat moss now to prevent a full renovation job in spring.
